Men's Golf Finishes Strong, Wins Reynolds Plantation Classic GREENSBORO, Ga. --
The Golden Eagles, who stood in second following first-day action, finished the event with a 287-286-288--861 and was the only squad under-par in the 10-team field. The victory was the team's first in tournament competition since the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate in February 2004.
"We played well this week," Southern Miss Men's Golf Coach Steve Johnson said. "The golf course played very difficult today, and we didn't get off to a great start. But we battled back, and I was pleased with the way our guys played. We had four guys finish in the top 10, and that really impressed me."
Southern Miss held off first-day leader Southeastern Louisiana to win the three-round tournament by seven strokes. The Lions finished second with a 868 (4-over), while Austin Peay was third with a 869. Co-host Mercer (971) and Middle Tennessee State (878) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Senior Danny Dennis led all Southern Miss golfers with a three-round score of 74-67-73--214 (2-under) to finish in a tie for second overall. Fellow senior Justin Elliott followed with a 72-73-71--216 to finish tied for seventh at even-par. Freshman Rocky Cleland (70-75-73--218) and junior Joel Myrick (75-72-71--218) each finished tied for 10th with respective scores of 2-over par. Sophomore Kyle Ramey shot a 71-74-81--226 to finish tied for 34th overall. Sophomore Jonathan Atkins competed in the event as an individual and finished tied for 51st with a 79-81-75--235.
Southeastern Louisiana's Aaron O'Callaghan took home medalist honors with a 3-under 213, while Austin Peay's Yoshio Yamamoto and New Orleans' Adam Collins were tied with Dennis for second.
The Golden Eagles now take a week off before returning to action in The Tiger Intercollegiate, Oct. 3-4, at the Colonial South Golf Club in Memphis, Tenn.
