September 12, 2005: Fifth Diary Entry ? On the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, playing and practicing at division rival
Trevis: Hurricane Katrina was worse than I thought it was going to be. It kind of spoiled our preparation, because we couldn?t practice like we wanted to. It was a bad situation for everyone who had to go through it.
Kevis: The hurricane was bad. It knocked us off our normal routine, having to practice at different times in
Trevis: Our teammates that had family go through the hurricane handled themselves and the situation in a good manner. There weren?t too many players who had family members placed in a really bad situation from the hurricane and if it did affect them, you couldn?t tell on the practice field.
Kevis: Some players had a difficult time with the situation, but once they got out to practice and got their mind off of it, they would be good for the day.
Trevis: There wasn?t too much of a difference living and practicing at
Kevis:
Trevis: We had been waiting a long time to play against Tulane, and when Katrina hit it put us back even more and made us want to play that much more. But I think we prepared well for
Kevis: We prepared well for the game and came out ready to play. But things didn?t fall our way, and we gave up some big plays on defense that really hurt us.
Trevis:
Kevis: In a way the week off helped us, and in a way it didn?t. We weren?t able to condition in our regular routine because we were sitting in the hotel a lot of the time. But it did help us in a way because it gave us more time to prepare for them. We didn?t have the equipment with us to watch film on them, but we were able to catch their first game on television.
Trevis: Though it was a heartbreaking loss, the team as a whole felt good about our performance. Like Kevis said, there were some big plays that really killed us, but overall we came out and played hard and to the best of our ability. We have to correct our mistakes and errors and get ready to go again against
Kevis: I feel the same way. Coach just got done telling us that the biggest improvement during a season is between games one and two. We?re going to come out this week, correct our mistakes, and be ready to play.
Trevis: I was proud of my brother?s play against
Kevis: I just went out there and played football. I?m out there to get my job done and execute the defense that?s being called. There?s always room for improvement, and I expect more out of myself, and probably other people expect more out of me as well. That was only the first game for all of us, and we all have a lot of improving to do for the next one.
Trevis: With so many momentum changes during the game, I can?t pick out one specific play that really changed the momentum of the game in their favor, but regardless we?ve got to overcome adversity when things like that happen. We have to have a short memory when that happens, throw it into the back of our head and get ready for the next play.
Kevis: The one play that stuck out in my mind that really changed the momentum of the game was the long pass completion right before the end of the first half. It was a big play and big momentum swing for them before the half. We can?t give away those types of big plays during a tight game like that.
Trevis: As a defensive unit, I think we played well. Besides a couple of receivers that got behind our secondary and a couple of missed tackles, the defense played well.
Kevis: The defense played well. We flew around the ball and the coaching staff said that we gave good effort, and I agree with them. We had a couple of plays where we made some mistakes, but we have to come out this week against McNeese State and play the game the way it?s supposed to be played.
Trevis: With this being the last time we play
Kevis: They will definitely remember us, even though they have more wins in the series (33-6-2 since 1947), we?ve always given them a dogfight. It was good while we played them, and I don?t know why they don?t want to play us anymore, but it was good while it lasted.
