Men's Golf Signs Apyan
Head Coach Steve Johnson |
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
? Southern Miss Head Men's Golf Coach Steve Johnson has announced the signing of Paul Apyan of Hixson, Tenn., to a national letter of intent for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the first signee of the spring period for the men's golf program.
Apyan, a standout golfer for Coach Earl Cornette at Hixson High School, helped lead his team to its first-ever Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class A/AA state championship in October and also won individual medalist honors, firing a 2-under par 141 in the event, including a course-record 68 in the second round of play.
"I'm excited about having Paul become a member of our team," Johnson said. "He will be a talented and outstanding addition to a young, talented team. I'm looking forward to his great playing ability, as well as the leadership and skills he will bring to our program."
While at Hixson, Apyan played as the No. 1 golfer and earned medalist honors in four events during the season. For his efforts, Apyan was named the Best of Preps Player of the Year by the Chattanooga Times Free Press. He holds a scoring average of 73.8 and has competed in various tournaments and tours on the junior golf level, including the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour and the Plantation Junior Golf Tour.
Apyan joins both Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Jason Cuthbertson (Conway, Ark.) as incoming members of the 2005-06 men's golf team. Cleland and Cuthbertson both signed during the early signing period in November.
