Elbow Injury Sidelines Cashion For Season

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced that sophomore pitcher Mike Cashion will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining an elbow injury against East Carolina last weekend that will require surgery.

Cashion tore a ligament in his right elbow in the fifth inning of Friday?s game at East Carolina. He will have ?Tommy John? surgery this week and the recovery time will be ninth months to a year.

?I am disappointed especially for Mike but also for the team that his season was cut short,? Palmer said. ?He worked very hard in the offseason and showed a lot of improvement. He was pitching well and was having a great year. With the surgery, he has an excellent chance of making a full recovery and will be able to continue his collegiate career.?

Cashion started eight games this season and pitched two complete games. He is 4-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 54.2 innings pitched. He struck out a team-high 60 batters, walked 19 and opponents were only hitting .223 against him. He struck out a career-high 13 batters against McNeese State on Feb. 26 and struck out 10 against Memphis on April 1. He was named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week for him performance against Memphis, where he gave up one run on seven hits, walked three and struck out 10, only giving up one extra base hit.

Southern Miss hosts Saint Louis for a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field on Fri.-Sun., April 15-17. Friday?s game will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday?s at 4 p.m. and Sunday?s at 1 p.m.
