Baseball Downs New Orleans, 8-1, In Non-Conference Contest
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss? Patrick Ezell pitched eight strong innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out eight batters, and Jason Lowery finished with two hits and drove in a season-high four runs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 8-1win over New Orleans, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,013.
Marc Maddox and Jody Blount each finished with two hits for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss (25-7) finished with eight runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while UNO (10-21) scored one run on six hits and committed one error.
Privateer starter Daniel Rodriguez (1-5) dropped his fifth decision of the season, giving up six runs, five earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out one.
Southern Miss took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Trey Sutton reached on a one-out walk, moved to third on a single by Willcutt and scored on Lowery?s double to left center. Willcutt scored when
UNO scored one in the third inning to cut the Golden Eagle lead in half. Schwab hit a one-out double to left center, stole third and scored when T.J. Baxter flew out to left field.
The Golden Eagles added another run in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Southern Miss scored four more in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 7-1. Chris Matesich dropped a bunt single down the third base line and moved to second on Maddox?s single up the middle. Matesich scored and Maddox moved to third when Sutton reached on an errant throw by the catcher when he tried to retire him at first base on a bunt down the third base line. A walk to Willcutt loaded the bases before Lowery drove in Maddox and Sutton with an infield single to the shortstop. Kevin Coker reached on an infield single to the shortstop to drive in Willcutt for the fourth run of the inning.
The Golden Eagles scored one more in the sixth inning to push its lead to 8-1, the final outcome. Maddox singled and stole second, advanced to third when Willcutt flew out to deep center and scored on Lowery?s ground out to short.
