Shannon Stueber leads Southern Miss to victory |
--- Southern Miss? Shannon Stueber scored four points in the final
Southern Miss led by as many as nine points in the second half, before Blazers battled back to cut Southern Miss? lead to one (59-58) with 2:42 left in the game; however Stueber?s field goal with 1:21 left in the contest put the Lady Eagles up three as they never looked back.
?Our freshmen have come along way in being able to gain some composure,? Head Coach Joye Lee McNelis said. ?Tonight, I don?t think we did a great job from the free throw line or keeping them (UAB) off the glass. We have to give UAB a lot of credit on their rebounding.?
UAB out rebounded Southern Miss, 52-31, including 20 offensive rebounds. The Lady Eagles had only 16 turnovers and forced UAB into 26, scoring only 13 points off the Blazers? miscues.
Stueber led all scorers with 24 points, while Deondra Carter added 16 points and six rebounds for the Lady Eagles.
UAB (6-18, 3-8) was led by Lauren Brittingham?s 14 points. Domaneice Moore tallied a double-double for UAB with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. LaKitha Murray contributed 11 points, while Carmen Guzman added 10. Additionally, Christon Ingram had a career-high 12 rebounds.
?UAB is a solid team and we have a lot respect for Carmen Guzman,? McNelis said. ?She almost had a double-double, but she is one heck of a player. Coach Smith has done a good job with her young team. I consider this a big win for us.?
UAB connected on only 8-of-22 from the charity stripe while Southern Miss hit 17-of-25. The Blazers struggled especially in the second half, as they connected on only 3-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Southern Miss (9-14, 3-7) took a 33-26 lead into the locker room at halftime, after hitting 46.7 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes of play. The Blazers hit only 32.3 percent in the first half, but battled back to connect on 15-of-25 (60.0 percent) in the final 20 minutes, to put themselves back in contention.
