Men's Basketball Wins Big Over William Carey, 90-57

The Southern Miss men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak tonight, defeating William Carey 90-57 before 4,062 in Reed Green Coliseum.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 3-6 on the season, while William Carey falls to 0-9.
William Carey opened the game on a three point bucket from Renaldo Dorsey and led 5-2 as Dorsey scored on a dunk. But Southern Miss took the lead for good on back-to-back jumpers from Mildon Ambres and a basket from David Cornwell to take a 8-7 lead which the team never relinquished.
Southern Miss stretched its first half lead out to seven points with 11:18 remaining, but William Carey was within three points, 18-15 with 10:31 remaining. But that's as close as the Crusaders would get for the remainder of the game, as Southern Miss used a 11-3 run to take a 29-18 lead with 8:20 to play. The Golden Eagles stretched that lead to as many as 14, before leading by 11, 44-33 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half on a 12-3 run to take a 20-point lead with 12:08 to play, before winning by 33, 90-57.
Southern Miss out-shot William Carey 57.8 (37-64) to 46.3 percent (19-41). The Golden Eagles held a 31-27 edge in rebounding.
Shaun Simpson led Southern Miss with a game-high 20 points, the second highest total of his career. David Cornwell added a career-high 15, while Ambres added 13 and Jarekus Singleton netted 11. Ambres had a team-high six rebounds.
Braxton Robins scored a team high 17 points for William Carey, while Scotty Fletcher added 15 and Dorsey netted 11 and a team-best six rebounds.
Southern Miss returns to action on Monday, Dec. 19, hosting Tennessee State in a 7 p.m., contest in Reed Green Coliseum.
