Women's Basketball Team Plays At Mississippi State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Southern Miss travels to Starkville to play in-state rival Mississippi State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Southern Miss is 1-3, following an 85-75 loss to Northwestern (La.) State in the championship game of the Lady Eagle Classic. Ashley Boehnel and Kendra Reed were named to the all-tournament team for their performances.
Three players are averaging in double figures with Ashley Harrell leading the team in scoring with 16.8 points followed by Reed 16.5 points and Boehnel with 14.0. Amber Eugene leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 rebounds per game. As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 71.5 points, while shooting 45.0 percent from the field, including 40.7 percent from three-point range and 72.7 percent from the line.
Mississippi State is 1-3 following a 70-48 loss to Arizona State in the Caribbean Classic. The Bulldogs have lost their last three games. Robin Porter leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 12.8 points per game. Mamie McKinney leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 rebounds. State is averaging 56.0 points and 33.0 rebounds as a team, while shooting 45.2 percent from the field. Head Coach Sharon Fanning is in her 11th season and her record is 171-128. State returns eight letterwinners, including two starters from last year's team that posted a 17-12 record.
This is the 31st meeting between the two teams and Southern Miss leads the series 18-12. The last time the two teams played was Dec. 19, 2000, State defeated Southern Miss 68-53 in Hattiesburg. The Bulldogs have won the last four meetings.
Following the Mississippi State game, the Lady Eagles head to Raleigh, N.C., for the NC State Tournament. Southern Miss plays Liberty in its first game. The time is set for 2 p.m., central.
