HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Men's Golf Coach Steve Johnson has announced the signing of Freddie Janneck of Madison, Miss., to a national letter of intent for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the second signee of the early period for the men's golf program.
Janneck, a standout golfer for Coach Russell Boshers at St. Joseph Catholic School, is currently the No. 1 ranked player in Mississippi. In 2005, he was the Mississippi Junior Player of the Year, also winning the honor in 2004.
He was the 2005 State Farm Mississippi Junior Amateur Champion, shooting rounds of 67, 71 and 71 for a 209 total, earning medalist honors. He also earned medalist honors at the Mississippi/Louisiana Junior Championship, posting rounds of 64 and 71. He was also the 2005 Gulf States Junior Canton Champion.
Since 2003, he has won nine of 11 Mississippi Junior Golf Association tournaments he's entered, and is fully exempt in American Junior Golf Association tournaments for 2006.
He was the state medalist in 2A golf as a freshman and sophomore, finishing as the state medalist runner-up as a junior. He earned medalist honors in 15-of-27 matches and tournaments played during his sophomore and junior seasons.
"We're excited to have him join our team," Johnson said. "He's an excellent player and is the current No. 1 player in the state. He will be a big addition to our program."
