HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Men's Golf Coach Steve Johnson has announced the signing of Wesley Carter of Birmingham, Ala., to a national letter of intent for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the first signee of the early period for the men's golf program.
Carter is a standout golfer for Coach Benny Eaves at Hoover High School in Birmingham. A five-year letterwinner who has competed in the high school level since the seventh grade, Carter had a low round of 64 in 2004, leading his team to the AHSAA state sectionals. Carter also led his team to the Class 6A championship in 2003.
"I'm excited about having a player of Wesley's caliber become a member of our team," Johnson said. "I believe that his commitment to his sport and his academics will be a good fit for us. I'm looking forward to the experience and skills that he will bring to our program."
In 2005, He was twice named the Birmingham News Player of the Week last season, and is ranked 85th in the country and third in the state of Alabama -- the top prospect in the Class of 2006 -- in the Titleist/Golfweek rankings. Carter has competed in several tournaments this season in the American Junior Golf Association and the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. He won the AJGA Preseason Junior Tournament at Chateau Elan in March.
