Golden Eagle Tracksters Fared Well In Season Opener
BATON ROUGE ? The Southern Miss Golden Eagle track and field teams opened the 2005 indoor season at the Purple Tiger Invitational Saturday at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse and the results did not disappoint Head Coach Wayne Williams.
Tanika Liburd turned in two outstanding performances, finishing second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.67 and 6th in the long jump with a jump of 17?10.75?. Newcomer Aaliyah Shareef posted a school-record jump in the triple jump with a distance of 40?5? for a first-place finish. Four other Lady Eagles advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash, including Angela Johnson who posted a time of 7.78, Erica Alston with a time of 7.79, Tori Wells with a time of 7.82 and Raquel Washington with a time of 7.84.
Wells also finished eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.12. Raquel Washington was second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.78. Alisha Edwards finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.66, while Karen Tankersley was third in the one-mile run with a time of 5:33.60 and Naomi Kiprotich finished third in the 3,000 meters with a school record 10:23.49.
Krista Miller finished third in the high jump with a height of 5?5.75?. Shannon McGill was seventh in the pole vault with a height of 10?0?.
Several Golden Eagles competed in the championship events with Becca Rop finishing third in the one-mile run with a time of 5:17.95; Dijana Kojic was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.39. Sharlyn Monroe finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 17?9?.
The men?s team was just as successful in their season opener. Newcomer Marcus Brown highlighted the team with a first-place finish in the weight throw with a school record 56?3.25?. Teammate Maulies Pettaway took fourth with a toss of 50?2.25?. Brown also finished seventh in the shot with a throw of 48?11?. Marvin Lucas was fourth in the men?s championship long jump with a jump of 24?0.25?. Brad Pritchard finished fourth in the high jump with a jump of 6?6?. Marcus Polk was third in the long jump with a jump of 23?6.26?.
In the running events, Cornelius Duncan posted a time of 50.93 in the 400 meters for a third-place finish. Jerry Teachey finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.47, while Marvin Pinnock finished sixth in the championship 400 meters with a time of 51.56.
The distance medley relay team (Tankersley-Adriane Battle-Kiprotich-Rop) finished fifth with a time of 12:59.02 and the 4x400 meter relay team (Kasey House-Candi Johnson-Jocelyn Young-Kojic) finished eighth with a time of 4:04.24. The men?s 4x400 meter team (Duncan-C.J. Collier-Durran Dunn-Pinnock) finished sixth with a time of 3:25.30.
The Southern Miss teams return to action on Jan. 21 at Middle Tennessee State Invitational.
