Three Southern Miss Athletes Receive Scholar-Athlete Awards

CHICAGO - Conference USA named the receipients of the 2003-04 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards on Friday and three Southern Miss athletes received the award, Lana Lewis for women's basketball, Jennifer Keefe for women's golf and Olivia Berry for women's tennis.
The C-USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards are presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.
Lewis, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter, finished her career as the all-time leader in free throw percentage. She averaged 9.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.74 assists per game during her senior season. She led the team in three-point field goals made and attempted. She was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District VI University Women's Basketball First Team honoree. The Booneville, Miss., had a 3.84 GPA in biological sciences.
Keefe, a three-year letterwinner, was named second team All-Conference USA this past season. She finished the season with a 77.91 stroke average in 24 rounds. She was the medalist at the NIU Snowbird Classic. She had seven top 20 finishes, including three top 10. She finished seventh at the Conference USA Golf Championship. The Winterpark, Fla., native has a 3.99 GPA in international business.
Berry, a three-year letterwinner, completed her degree in three years. She finished the season with a 13-17 record, including 8-13 in dual match play at No. 5 singles. She teamed with Courtney Ulrich in doubles and finished with an 8-9 record. She was a Southern Miss Presidential Foundation Scholar and received the C. L. Dews Scholar Athlete Award, displaying a 4.00 GPA in biology.
DePaul, Southern Miss, TCU and Tulane each produced three scholar-athlete award winners, while USF had two. Nine of C-USA?s 15 institutions produced at least one scholar-athlete winner.
