Baseball's Tubb Named CoSIDA Academic All-American
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ?
Southern Miss senior relief pitcher Austin Tubb was selected for the highest award that honors both academic excellence and athletic achievement as a 2004 Academic All-America second team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday."I'm really proud of Austin and his achievements on the field and in the classroom," Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer said. "He exemplifies the true meaning of the word, student-athlete and has been one of our top pitchers over the past two seasons. This is quite an honor for not only him but the Southern Miss Baseball program as well."
Tubb was the only CoSIDA Academic All-American selection from Conference USA as well the only one from the state of Mississippi. This marks the second year in a row that Southern Miss has had an Academic All-American as Clint King was named to the third team last year. It is also the fifth baseball player in Golden Eagle history to be named to the team (Mark Carson, 1991; Derek Reams, 1995; Jeremy Scheid, 1998, Clint King, 2003; Austin Tubb, 2004).
Tubb currently is 7-0, with 10 saves and a 1.01 ERA in 35.2 innings pitched this season. He has struck out 47 batters, walked six and opponents are hitting .225 against him. His seven wins rank him second on the team. He is Southern Miss' all-time save leader (20) and needs three more to tie for the all-time season record.
As a junior in his first year at Southern Miss, he finished with a 3-2 record, 10 saves and a 1.45 ERA in 31 innings pitched. He struck out 30 and walked nine and opponents hit .196 agaainst him. For his outstanding season, he was named a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA).
The CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected by votes from CoSIDA, the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Since the program?s inception in 1952, over 12,000 student-athletes have been honored with the award.
