Baseball Ranked As High As No. 21 In Latest Polls
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss baseball team, coming off a 4-2 record last week, including a second place finish at the Conference USA Tournament, is ranked No. 21 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association, No. 22 by Baseball America, No. 25 by Collegiate Baseball, and No. 26 by Sports Weekly-ESPN Coaches Poll.
Southern Miss (44-17, 21-9 Conference USA) lost 10-5 to Memphis, before defeating Tulane 16-4 (8 innings), Memphis 13-0 (7 innings), UAB 16-10 and UAB 9-7 to advance to the championship game for the second year in a row. TCU defeated Southern Miss, 3-1, to win its first Conference USA championship.
East Carolina (48-11) is ranked No. 7 by Collegiate Baseball, Sports Weekly-ESPN Coaches Poll and NCBWA and No.8 by Baseball America. Tulane (38-19) is ranked No. 23 by NCBWA, No. 25 by Sports Weekly-ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 29 by Collegiate Baseball.
Southern Miss travels to Baton Rouge, La., for the NCAA Baseball Tournament, on Friday-Sunday, June 4-6. The No. 2 seed Golden Eagles will play No. 3 seed College of Charleston on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. No. 1 seed LSU will host No. 4 seed Army at 2 p.m. The two losers will play on Saturday at 11 a.m., and the two winners will play at 3 p.m.
