East Carolina upends Southern Miss 9-0
HATTIESBURG, Miss?
With the win, East Carolina improves to 46-8, 24-8 in C-USA. Southern Miss falls to 39-14, 20-8.
?We?ve just got to regroup tomorrow,? Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer said. ?We hit some hard balls tonight but they were right at people. We?ve got a very good team, but we don?t respond well when our starting pitcher doesn?t go six innings.?
Greg Bunn (8-0) got the win for the Pirates, pitching eight innings and five hits, while striking out six and walking three. Ricky Brooks pitched the ninth, allowing one hit.
Patrick Ezell (5-2) took the loss for the Eagles, lasting just 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and three runs, while walking two.
Daniel Best pitched 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs, three earned, while walking one. Nick Valluzzo pitched 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run, while striking out two and walking one. Dane Reiter pitched the ninth, allowing three hits and one run.
Ezell was hit on the lower left leg in the third inning off a ball hit by Ryan Norwood and did not return to the mound. Kevin Coker, starting catcher, left three pitches later after a collision with Norwood. Coker left the game with a broken index finger on his right hand.
The Pirates added two more in the fifth on a RBI single by Mark Minicozzi and a RBI sacrifice fly by John Poppert.
Shepherd had two hits to lead Southern Miss.
