Eagles Dump Oklahoma State, 21-5
LAKE CHARLES, LA. - Southern Miss banged out 22 hits and got 8-hit pitching from Cliff Russum, Daniel Best, Adam Smith and Nick Valluzzo to remain unbeaten in the Cox Communications/Lake Area Classic with a 21-5 victory over Oklahoma State at McNeese State here today.
The Eagles are 2-0 in the event and will wrap up play in the tournament, meeting host McNeese State in a 3 p.m., game Sunday.
Jarrett Hoffpauir led Southern Miss with five hits, and five RBIs. Mark Maddox and Ryan Frith each had four hits, one of Frith's a home run, one of three Eagle home runs in the game. Hoffpauir also had a home run, as did Jody Blount, who accounted for five RBIs.
Russum started and went five innings to pick up his third victory of the season, in as many games.
Scott Richmond (0-2) took the loss for the Cowboys, who dropped to 9-4 with the loss.
"We did a good job offensively today,"said Head Coach Corky Palmer. "The players saw the importance of the game, and responed accordingly. This victory puts us in a position to win the tournament, and the today's win came against a quality opponent, with a rich baseball tradition."
Southern Miss took a 2-1 lead after two innings, added five in the fourth, and eight in the sixth inning to take a commanding 15-1 lead. Oklahoma State cut the lead by four in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the seventh, two more in the eighth and one in the ninth to close out the victory.
Southern Miss scored in six of the game's nine innings.
