The Golden Eagles are also No. 19 by Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll, No. 21 by Baseball America and No. 26 by Collegiate Baseball.
Southern Miss, (14-2), just completed a three-game weekend sweep of Eastern Illinois (10-3, 12-0, 11-0), including Saturday?s dramatic nine-inning no-hitter fired by Golden Eagle junior pitcher Cliff Russum, a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week.
Earlier in the week, USM dropped a 9-3 decision at Alabama.
Tulane is ranked No. 15, East Carolina is No. 22 and Memphis is No. 32. Houston and UAB received votes in the poll.
Southern Miss hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a midweek game on Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles start defense of their regular season and tournament titles this weekend with a three-game home series against Houston. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 3 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m
