Louisville Claims Miss Louie Season Opener Title
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Louisville used the best team round of the day to come from behind and win the Miss Louie Season Opener women's golf tournament at the Shadow Ridge Golf Club here Saturday, with rounds of 325-304--629, six shots in front of UAB, at 317-318--635.
Host Southern Miss finished four shots further back in third place, at 323-316--639. UNO finished fourth at 326-325--651, Jackson State fifth at 351-337-688 and Mobile University was sixth at 369-354--723.
Louisville found itself in third place after the first round of the 36-hole event, but responded with the 304 round to capture first place. Head Coach Julie Gallup and her Lady Eagles trailed UAB by six shots after one round, improved by seven shots, from 323-to-316, in the second round, only to see Louisville post the 304 and move ahead of both teams.
Louisville's Elly Leonard captured medalist honors with an 80-73--153 total, a shot in front of UAB's Brooke Mangan who finished at 73-81--154. UAB and Louisville captured the top five individual spots in the event. Natasha Vincent shot rounds of 78-81--159 to lead the Lady Eagles. Her score was good for a tie for eighth place. Mia Davidsson used rounds of 83-77--160 to finish second on the Lady Eagle team, and in a tie for 10th place in the field.
Other Southern Miss players and their scores include: Ofelia Lopez, No. 12 at 86-75--161, Jennifer Keith, tied for 13th at 81-83--164, and Nicole Mackey, No. 15 at 81-84--165.
Following the Miss Louie Season Opener, the Lady Eagles will play next in the NIU Snowbird Classic in Tampa, Fla., Mar. 12-13.
