Eagle Golfers Host 2nd Annual Sam Hall Classic
The tournament is named in honor of longtime former Southern Miss men's golf coach, Sam Hall, who coached the Golden Eagles through the 2000 season, and who is a renowned senior golfer in southeastern golfing circles. The tournament will be played on the recently-renovated, par-72, 6,950-yard Hattiesburg Country club course, a layout that through 1994 was the host course of the PGA's Magnolia Classic tournament. Teams played Sunday practice rounds over a soggy HCC layout and were guests at a Sunday night dinner at the country club. Teams will start a busy day with a 7:30 a.m., shotgun start, and use continuous play for the full 36-holes scheduled for Monday. Tuesday's single, and final, round also will start at 7:30 with tee times off both No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Southern Miss finished in a tie for third place in last year's event with a score of 284-287-286--857, and the Golden Eagles' Shane Rushing took medalist honors in the event with scores of 66-71-68--205. Southeastern Louisiana won last year's event at 285-277-290--851, with McNeese State finishing second at 278-293-283--857. Wichita State tied Southern Miss for third, with a team score of 291-279-287--857. Teams participating in the 54-hole event include Delta State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Nebraska, North Carolina-Greensboro, Samford, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin, Troy State, Tulane, West Florida and Wichita State.
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Head Coach Steve Johnson and his Golden Eagle men's golf team will host the 2nd Annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate golf tournament (presented by Cleveland Golf) Monday and Tuesday at the Hattiesburg Country Club. The 13-team event is scheduled for 36 holes on Monday and a wrapup 18-hole round Tuesday.
