Lady Eagles Fall to UL-Monroe, 63-46
MONROE, La.- Louisiana-Monroe took advantage of 48 Southern Miss turnovers, leading to 33 points off those miscues for a 63-46 victory over the Lady Eagles. Southern Miss falls to 2-4, while UL-Monroe improved to 3-2.
Three Lady Eagles scored in double figures with Deondra Carter and Kimberly Rigg scoring 12 points apiece and Shannon Stueber added 10 points in spite of fouling out at the 6:02 mark in the game. Rigg had a team-high nine rebounds.
"At times, I thought we did a good job of making adjustments in our defense that caused some problems," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "But when you have 48 turnovers, you're not going to win many games."
Michelle Biley led ULM with 14 points followed by Nina Randle with 10 points.
UL-Monroe quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the Lady Eagles had eight turnovers and only one shot on their first eight possessions. Southern Miss fell behind by nine points, 11-2, before going on a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead at the 10:11 mark in the half. ULM then used a 16-6 run to push its lead back to nine points, 27-18, with just under three minutes to play in the half. The Lady Eagles were able to cut the lead to three, 30-24, just before intermission.
"I thought Emer Foley played with some fire tonight," McNelis said. "I believe in that as goes the point guard, so goes the team. We didn't get a good game out of either of our point guards tonight."
Southern Miss out rebounded the ULM 44-27 and finished the game shooting 40.5 percent from the field. The Lady Eagles shot 75 percent from the line on 12-of-16, while ULM shot 65.7 percent on 23-of-35 from the line.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday when the Lady Eagles host Southern Illinois in a 5 p.m. game.
