Southern Miss Wins Big Over William Carey, 90-46
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss won its sixth straight game for the first time since the 2000-2001 season, as it defeated William Carey 90-46 Tuesday in Reed Green Coliseum.
Jasper Johnson paced the Golden Eagles with 16 points and had a career-best 17 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the season and sixth of his career.
The Crusaders (4-9) became the second NAIA team to fall victim to the Golden Eagles this season. Southern Miss (9-2) also defeated Spring Hill, 76-60 on Dec. 7.
Southern Miss and William Carey, separated by only a few miles in Hattiesburg, met Wednesday, for the second time in each schools respective history. Southern Miss won the first meeting, 91-59 last season.
The Golden Eagles put the game out of reach early, leading by 26, 46-20 at halftime.
Southern Miss pushed its lead into a sizable one in the second half, as it posted its biggest margin of victory of the season. It was also the school?s 10th largest margin of victory.
Mildon Ambres, a sophomore transfer, playing in his first game for Southern Miss, after becoming eligible after fall exams, scored 12 points in his debut for the Golden Eagles. Dante Stiggers also had 12, while Michael Ford added 13.
J.R. Willis led William Carey with 13 points, while Renaldo Dorsey had 11.
Southern Miss returns to action Thursday, Dec. 30, at New Orleans. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
