Johnson Named Conference USA Co-Player of the Week
Jasper Johnson |
HATTIESBURG, Miss.
-- Southern Miss basketball's Jasper Johnson was named as one of two Conference USA Co-Players of the Week today for the period ending Dec. 19.
Johnson, a junior forward from Hollandale, Miss., becomes the first Southern Miss player to be tabbed with the honor this season. DePaul's Quemont Greer also was honored.
Johnson recorded a career performance with 27 points to help the Golden Eagles post their first win in school history over LSU. Johnson also grabbed 10 rebounds in the 88-84 overtime victory for his fifth career double-double.
Johnson currently is averaging 18.2 points (fifth in C-USA) and ranks second in the conference with a 64.6 (62-of-96) shooting percentage from the field.
Following a career-high 32-point performance, Greer earns the C-USA Player of the Week nod for the third week in a row. Greer became the first DePaul player since 1981 (Terry Cummings) to score 20-plus points in six consecutive games with 20 against Northwestern on Wednesday and 32 in a win over Illinois-Chicago. Greer moved into first place on the C-USA scoring chart after the UIC game and is averaging 21.7 points per game this season. For the week, he shot 61.1 percent (22-36) from the field, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked four shots. Greer became the 19th DePaul player to both score 1,000 career points and grab 500 career rebounds.
It's the first time a Golden Eagle has been honored since Charles Gaines was named as the player of the week on Dec. 22 of last year. It also marks the second career player of the week award for Johnson, who was selected for the honor in January of 2002.
