Southern Miss Falls in Early Scrimmage
Shannon Stueber scored 18 points in scrimmage |
? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle basketball team held a practice scrimmage against
?Obviously, we?re disappointed in the outcome when you look at the scoreboard,? McNelis said. ?We are not making excuses, but we were not prepared to play against a zone defense today. We have not done a lot of work against a zone, and we were just beginning to put in that offense. We have to be able to rebound and defend early, and we didn?t do either very well today. ?
?I thought we were more effective against the man-to-man defense,? McNelis said. ?We can use this opportunity as a teaching tool. We were disappointed in our rebounding game. They out-rebounded us. We have got to continue to improve each day.?
Freshman Shannon Stueber led Southern Miss with 18 points, while Liz Biland scored 14 points and Deondra Carter added 11 points. Biland also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
?I thought Shannon (Stueber) played with a lot of fire,? McNelis said. ?She played everywhere. I also thought Liz (Biland) played with a lot of hunger and fight. Two main things we have to accomplish and improve on are our rebounding and defense. We want our players to play with a lot of heart, blood and guts, and just lay it all on the line. However, we still have a ways to go, but we will get better.?
