Lady Eagles Continue Preseason Workouts
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis |
The practice was the team's eighth since opening the preseason on Oct. 16 and according to McNelis, the team is progressing.
?Our biggest challenge has been to teach them some mental toughness,? McNelis said. ?We want them to give an all-out effort when they step on the floor. We?ve done a lot of sprint work and run some stairs, trying to get their focus level up. We are practicing with no out of bounds.?
McNelis added, ?We are tying to get them to focus on the little things that they can control like getting on the floor after loose balls and crashing the offensive boards. These are some of the things they can control.?
During the first week of practice, McNelis has pointed out several on their early performances.
?We do have some early injuries, but I have to applaud the freshman, Kelsey Gurganus, for her toughness,? McNelis said. ?She?s having gall bladder surgery on Friday and has not missed a practice. Dianca Jones has done a solid job and she has begun to understand what we expect as far as the intensity level. Michelle Poindexter has only missed two practices even though she has been sick. Ashley Huffman has shown a tremendous amount of leadership. Probably the one who has been healthy and as tough as nails, is another freshman Shannon Stueber. She is having a good preseason. She has been aggressive, attacking everywhere. If I were giving out an all-out hustle award, she would definitely get it.?
The Lady Eagles continue the preseason with practices on Friday and Saturday before taking part in the Golden Eagle Basketball ?Mid-day Madness? with the men?s team on Saturday.
The preseason event begins with a free cookout at
