Lady Eagles Begin Four-Game Homestand, Host UNO
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Lady Eagles play the first of a four-game homestand, beginning with UNO on Jan. 7, before opening their Conference USA schedule on Jan. 10, against Tulane.
Southern Miss ran its record to 11-1, following a 63-47 win over Samford (1/4). Denise Wilson came off the bench to lead the team in scoring and rebounding with 12 points and seven rebounds. Deondra Carter and Tierra Lassiter added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Carter continues to lead Southern Miss in scoring at 12.9 points per game, while Michelle Poindexter leads the team in rebounding at 8.2 rebounds. As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 62.0 points and 41.1 rebounds per game, while holding its opponents 48.5 points and 32.4 rebounds per game.
UNO is 5-5 after an 83-61 win over Nicholls State on Jan. 4. In that game, Monique Taylor led a group of Privateers in scoring with 14 points followed by LaToya Clark with 13 points, Michelle Simmons and Jasmine Smiri added 11 points each. Simmons also dished out 10 assists.
Taylor leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 12.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. The team is averaging 67.6 points and 38.7 rebounds per game.
Southern Miss and UNO have played 29 times, dating back to the 1975-76 season. Southern Miss leads the series 21-8. Southern Miss won the first five meetings before losing in 1983. Southern Miss has won nine of the last 10 meetings.
Following the UNO game, Southern Miss opens Conference USA play on Jan. 10 against Tulane in a 7 p.m. tip.
