Golden Eagle Netters Have Successful First Day of Competition
CHATTANOOGA ? The Southern Miss men?s tennis team opened the 2003-04 season at the 2003 Baras/UTC Fall Classic, winning 11 of their 13 matches played Friday at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
?I was pleased with our performances in the opening rounds,? Head Coach Teddy Viator said. ?I thought we played hard and stayed with our game. This kind of competition helps prepare for the spring season.?
David Canudas, the top seed in the A-draw, defeated Manuel Miletic of Samford in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. He will meet Brandon Smith of Wofford at 8:30 a.m., Saturday. J.J. Martin, defeated Ruben Herrera of Jacksonville State, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0, before losing to Derek Haybittel of UT-Chattanooga, 6-4, 6-4.
In the B-draw, Marc Lux defeated Ben Johnson of Birmingham Southern, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (super tie breaker) and Mike Sherman of Lipscomb, 6-2, 6-3. He will play Vedran Smith of Jacksonville State. Reid Bourgeois defeated Chris Magnone of UNC-Greensboro, 7-5, 6-2, and Dominik Hecht of Tennessee Tech, 6-3, 6-4. Bourgeois meets Chris Barlow of Wofford.
The Golden Eagle freshmen played their first collegiate matches in the C-draw and fared well. Thomas Funke lost to Darko Fridi of Coastal Carolina, 6-3, 6-4, but bounced back to defeat Matt Wiseman of UT-Martin in the consolation draw, 6-2, 6-1. Christopher Rea of Madison, Miss., defeated John Christ of Samford, 6-0, 6-1, and Jeff Muthig of Wofford, 6-0, 6-3. He plays Felipe Abreu of Belmont. Dylan Mezey defeated Jerry Murray of Chattanooga, 6-1, 7-6 and Ian Conchar of UNC Greensboro, 6-0, 6-1. Mezey plays Clive Yeo of Samford.
All matches begin at 8:30 a.m., Saturday.
