Eagles Lose In a Playoff, Finish Second

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Southern Miss lost a one-hole playoff with Jacksonville State University today and finished second in the 19th-annual First Reliance Bank Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, hosted by Francis Marion University. The final round in the 54-hole event began amid morning showers, but finished with an exciting playoff under sunny skies.

The tournament was played on the par 72, 7,041-yard Country Club of South Carolina course.

Southern Miss shot the lowest team score of the final round, an even-par 288, to move from a fifth-place tie after Tuesday's 36-hole opening day, into a tie with the Gamecocks at nine-over 873 for 54 holes, forcing the playoff. The playoff consisted of each squad?s five team members playing the par-4 18th hole, with the four low scores counting. JSU finished the hole at one-under-par, while the Golden Eagles finished three-over.

South Alabama finished third one stroke back at 874, followed by Charlotte (875), Tulane (877), South Florida (878), East Carolina (884), Coastal Carolina (889), Old Dominion and Campbell (891), FMU (909), Texas-Pan American (911), Georgia State (915), and Virginia Commonwealth (916).

Charlotte led after 18 holes, while JSU owned the 36-hole lead. It marks the third time the Gamecocks have captured the tournament title, previously having won in 1998 and 1999. It was the first team playoff in the event?s history.

South Alabama's Gareth Maybin shot a final round two-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors at four-under-par 71-71-70--212. Matt Wofford led Southern Miss with a one-over-par (74-70-73--217) finish, and the Golden Eagles put all five of their players in the top 29 in the 75-player field. USM's worst round of the event was Shane Rushing's 78, but he sandwiched that between a pair of two-under-par 70s to finish in a tie for 12th.

Southern Miss will play next in the Cardinal Intercollegiate at Louisville, Ky., Sept. 29-30.
