Eagles Are 5th After 36 Holes
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Jacksonville State University (295-282--577) placed three golfers in the top 16 to take the lead after the opening day (36 holes) of the 19th-annual First Reliance Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, hosted by Francis Marion University here Monday.
Southern Miss posted team rounds of 295-290--585, and is tied with South Alabama for fifth place in the 14-team field. Matt Wofford led the Golden Eagle golfers today with rounds of 74 and 70 and his 144 total is tied for seventh place after 36 holes. Other Southern Miss players and their scores include Ben Snow (76-72--148) and Shane Rushing (70-78--148) tied for 23rd place, Justin Elliott (76-73--149) tied for 32nd, and Danny Dennis (75-75--150) tied for 41st.
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday with tee-times starting at 8 a.m. The 54-hole tournament is being played on the par 72, 7,041-yard Country Club of South Carolina course.
Jacksonville State fired the low team round of the day (282) in the afternoon to overtake Charlotte for the team lead. The 49ers led after the opening 18 holes with a four-under 284 score, but fired a 297 in the afternoon. East Carolina (293-289--582) and Tulane (287-295--582) are tied for fourth place.
Tulane?s Bill Roach, Jr., fired rounds of 69 and 70 to take the individual lead. Jason Harris of ECU is second, one stroke back at 74-66--140.
