HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Conference USA has named the recipients of its 2002-03 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards and Southern Miss standout Jeff Cook represents baseball.
C-USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.
Houston and Memphis each produced three scholar- athlete award winners, while Louisville, Marquette, Saint Louis, South Florida and UAB each had two. Eleven of C-USA?s 15 institutions produced at least one scholar athlete winner.
Cook recently completed his Southern Miss baseball career and was a fifth-round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Major League Draft. Cook helped lead Southern Miss to a 47-16 record, marking the most single-season victories ever by a Golden Eagle team. The 2003 team also won its first Conference USA regular season title, swept unbeaten through the C-USA tournament at Tulane to take that title, and earned a host spot in the NCAA Tournament where the Eagles made it to the finals before losing to Baylor.
Cook leaves Southern Miss with most of the school's batting records, including career home runs, hits, runs and total bases.
