King and Cook Named To Verizon Academic All-District Team
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss redshirt sophomore outfielder Clint King (first team) and senior outfielder Jeff Cook (second team) have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI University Division baseball team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
This marks the third-straight year that Southern Miss has had at least one player named to the team, and Cook has been named to the team each of the third time. King has a 3.77 grade point average and is majoring in accounting, and Cook has a 3.47 grade point average and is majoring in architectural engineer technology.
"I am proud of Jeff and Clint for their accomplishments," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "Both of these guys are truly deserving of this honor. They are examples of the true definition of a student-athlete. They both put in a lot of hard work and dedication, not only on the baseball field but also in their academic pursuits as well."
King is currently hitting .391 with 16 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs and 54 RBIs. He has stolen seven bases and has an on-base percentage of .450 and a slugging percentage of .734. He leads the Golden Eagles in batting average, hits, on-base percentage and slugging percentage and is second in runs, doubles, home runs and stolen bases. He is among the top 10 in Conference USA in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He has 26 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI games.
Cook is hitting .372 with 10 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs and 58 RBIs. He has 13 stolen bases and has an on-base percentage of .443 and a slugging percentage of .709. He leads the Golden Eagles in runs, triples, home runs, RBIs, total bases and stolen bases and is second in hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and walks. He is among the top 10 in Conference USA in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs, hits, RBIs, triples, home runs and total bases. He has 25 multiple-hit games and 14 multiple-RBI games. He has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week three times and National Hitter of the Week once.
The No. 22 Golden Eagles are 36-13 overall and 18-6 in Conference USA action. Southern Miss hosts South Florida for a three-game league weekend series on Fri.-Sun., May 9-11, 2003, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Friday's game starts at 7:30 p.m., Saturday's game is at 4 p.m., and Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m. Sunday's game will be senior day and will be a tribute to Mother's Day. All ladies will be admitted to the game for half price.
