Southern Miss to Host 2005 C-USA Tournament
The Conference USA Baseball Tournament will return to Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. in 2005 with the University of Southern Mississippi serving as the host institution. The C-USA Athletic Directors approved the site selection at their annual meetings earlier this month in Destin, Fla. and the league office officially released it today. The double-elimination tournament will run from Wednesday, May 25-Sunday, May 29, 2005.
Southern Miss hosted the inaugural Conference USA Tournament in 1996. A highly successful event, the tournament featured an offensive explosion that saw 56 home runs and six grand slams hit during the first five days of the then-six-day tourney. Tulane won that inaugural tournament with a 2-0 championship game victory over South Florida.
"We are delighted to be returning to Hattiesburg in 2005 for this event,? said Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. ?Southern Miss has a terrific facility and outstanding support that will make this tournament a tremendous showcase for C-USA baseball.?
?We are very pleased to bring the Conference USA Tournament back to Hattiesburg,? said Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini. ?I am confident that all of the teams will have an enjoyable experience and that the Hattiesburg community will help make this event a tremendous success.?
Yesterday, Southern Miss drew a crowd of 4,236 to watch the Golden Eagles play Southern University in an opening-round NCAA regional game, the third-largest crowd in stadium history. USM sold out the three-day regional, including standing room-only tickets, on Thursday morning.
The 2004 Conference USA Baseball Tournament will be played May 26-30 at Cougar Field in Houston, Texas. The University of Houston will serve as the host institution for the event.
