King Named Third-Team Verizon Academic All-American
King, who has a 3.77 grade point average in accounting, was recently named All-Conference USA first team, as well as being named the Conference USA Tournament Most Valuable Player. He was named to the all-tournament team as a redshirt freshman in 2002.
King is leading Southern Miss in hitting with a .397 batting average, hits (93), doubles (21), home runs (22), RBIs (71), total bases (182) and is second in runs (63) and stolen bases (7). He has a .457 on-base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage.
In Conference USA statistics, King is first in slugging percentage, doubles, home runs, total bases, second in batting average, hits and RBIs, fourth in on-base percentage and fifth in runs scored. Nationally, he is ranked No. 8 in home runs, No. 29 in RBIs and No. 43 in batting average.
Pitcher Mark Carson was a first-team honoree in 1991, catcher Derek Reams was named to the team twice in 1994 and 1995 and first baseman Jeremy Schied was named to the team in 1998.
The Verizon Academic All-America Teams program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected by votes from CoSIDA, the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Since the program?s inception in 1952, over 12,000 student-athletes have been honored with the award.
