Five Baseball Players Named To All-Conference Teams
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Conference USA has announced that Jeff Cook and Clint King were named first-team All-Conference USA, Brad Willcutt and Bob McCrory were named to the second team all-league and Marc Maddox was named to the all-freshman team. These awards will be presented at the league's awards dinner tonight.
Cook, a two-time all-conference selection, is hitting .376 with 13 doubles, three triples, 20 home runs and 66 RBIs. He has an on-base percentage of .444 and a slugging percentage of .726. He is tied for the conference lead in home runs, is second in total bases and RBIs, third in slugging percentage, fifth in batting average and eighth in on-base percentage in overall games. In conference games only, he is tied for the lead in home runs, is second in slugging percentage and total bases, fourth in on-base percentage, sixth in RBIs and eighth in batting average. He was named the conference hitter or co-hitter of the week four times and national hitter of the week once. He has 28 multi-hit games and 16 multi-RBI games.
King, an all-tournament selection last year, is hitting .397 with 19 doubles, one triple, 20 home runs and 65 RBIs. He has an on-base percentage of .456 and a slugging percentage of .767. He is tied for the conference lead in home runs, leads in slugging percentage and total bases, third in on-base percentage, RBIs, doubles and hits and fifth in runs scored. In conference games only, he leads in slugging percentage and total bases and is third in RBIs and eighth in hits. He has 31 multi-hit games and 17 multi-RBI games.
Willcutt, an all-freshman selection last year, is third on the team, hitting .335 with a conference-leading 20 doubles, 11 triples and 53 RBIs. He has an on-base percentage of .427 and a slugging percentage of .581. He ranks among conference leaders in doubles, slugging percentage, home runs, walks, total bases and fielding percentage. In conference games only, he is among the leaders in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, home runs, walks, doubles, and total bases. He has 25 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI games.
McCrory, a second-team selection last year as well, has a 9-2 record with a 4.32 ERA in 77 innings pitched. He has struck out 70 batters and walked 40. Opponents are hitting .288 off of him. In conference games, he is 5-2 with a 3.49 ERA in 67 innings pitched. He has struck out 58, walked 33 and opponents are hitting .260 off of him. McCrory struck out a career-high 12 batters at Memphis and pitched a complete-game against East Carolina. He is among conference leaders in strikeouts.
Maddox played in 49 games and started 20 at first base. He is hitting .359 with nine doubles, one triple and three home runs. He has a .439 slugging percentage and a 5.76 slugging percentage. He has seven multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games. In conference games, he is hitting .444 with seven doubles, one triple, three home runs and 12 RBIs.
Southern Miss, the No. 1 seed, will face No. 8 seed, Charlotte, at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday at Turchin Stadium on the campus of Tulane University.
