Baseball Announces Seventh Signee of Spring Period
"Corey is an athletic pitcher who can throw three pitches for strikes," Palmer said. "He has a good fastball, a slider and his outpitch is his curve ball. He possesses a loose arm and has good command of his pitches. He has a good chance to come in next season and see time right away on the pitching staff."
As a senior, Bass finished with a 6-1 record, a 1.79 ERA and averaged 9.68 strikeouts per game. He was named the Petal's Most Outstanding Pitcher and was selected to play in the Mississippi All-Star Game. He was a three-year letterwinner and helped lead Petal to the district championship in 2002. He also was named to the Who's Who Among High School Students.
This marks the seventh signee of the spring signing period and 10th overall. The Golden Eagles signed Casey Summerlin (3B, Vancleave HS/Vancleave, Miss.), Drew Carson (OF, Neville HS/Monroe, La.), Chris Matesich (SS, Germantown HS/Germantown, Tenn.), Mike Cashion (RHP, Clinton HS/Clinton, Miss.), Brett Hoeflich (1B/OF, Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Trey Cuevas (C/Oak Grove HS/Oak Grove, Miss.) during the spring signing period, and Barry Bowden (RHP/Vidalia HS/Vidalia, La.), Patrick Ezell (P/Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Nathan Sanders (OF/Meridian CC/Meridian, Miss.) in the fall signing period.
Southern Miss is currently 40-13 overall and 22-6 in Conference USA action, good enough for first place in the standings. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 17 in Baseball America, No. 17 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Poll, No. 23 in USA Today/Basebal Weekly Coaches Poll and No. 24 in Collegiate Baseball's Poll.
