Baseball Receives Highest Ranking In School History
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team moved up two spots in Baseball America's Poll to No. 19, moved up one place to No. 20 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Poll, moved up one place to No. 21 in the Collegiate Baseball's Poll and up two places to No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll after posting a 4-1 record last week, including a win at No. 12 Mississippi State and a Conference USA weekend series sweep against UAB.
The 19th-place ranking by Baseball America marks the highest ranking by the Southern Miss Baseball program. In 2001, the Golden Eagles were ranked No. 20 by Collegiate Baseball in its Feb. 26 poll.
"The ranking is recognition for the players and coaching staff for their dedication and hard work to this point of the season," Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer said. "It is nice to be recognized this way, However, we still have a lot of baseball to play this season and the toughest part of schedule is ahead of us. Our players need to continue working hard to reach the goals that we set at the beginning of the season."
Conference USA member Tulane was ranked No. 23 in the Writer's Poll, No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 25 in Baseball America. TCU was ranked No. 29 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 30 by the NCBWA. Houston received votes in the NCBWA Poll.
