Golden Eagle Golfers Are 6th At C-USA Tournament
DADE CITY, Fla. -- Southern Miss put three players in the top 20, and is in sixth place, only seven shots behind first-round leader Charlotte, after one round of the Conference USA men's Golf Tournament being played at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club here.
Charlotte teams after one round, at 285, with UAB and TCU tied for second at 288, and Houston (289) and South Florida (290) rounding out the top five.
Southern Miss senior Justin Emil did not play Monday after returning to his Gulfport, Miss., home following the Sunday death of his father, Gerald. Also, Ben Snow withdrew from today's first round, forcing Southern Miss to count just the four players who completed the round. Sophomore Michael Soroka shot one of the better rounds of the day, with an even par 35-36--71, and is tied for eighth place.
Freshman Justin Elliott finished at one over par 36-36--72, and is tied for 11th place. Junior Matt Wofford is tied for 18th after an opening-day 33-40--73, and sophomore Shane Rushing is tied for 45th place, with an opening round 35-31--76. Head Coach Steve Johnson is expected to replace Emil for Tuesday's and Wednesday's rounds.
Charlotte's Russell Killough and UAB's Clark Brown are tied for the individual lead after one round, at 3-under-par 68. Charlotte's Mike Shamp and TCU's Adam Rubison are tied for third, at 69. In all, seven players broke par on opening day and another three, including Soroka, matched par.
Second-round play is scheduled for Tuesday morning and the final 18 holes for Wednesday.
