Charlotte Comes From Behind to Defeat Southern Miss, 4-3
NEW BERLIN, WIS. ? After being down 3-1, eighth-seeded Charlotte (11-11) defeated sixth-seed Southern Miss (9-13) in the first upset in the C-USA Men's Tennis Championship.
Southern Miss won the doubles point and won the first two singles point. Reid Bourgeois defeated Zvi Lantsberg at the no. 6, 7-5, 6-1. Nicolas Cataret put the Golden Eagles within one point of a victory by winning at the no. 4 over Christofer Bowman, 6-2, 6-4.
Charlotte, however, won four straight singles matches to close out the contest. Arturo Aguirre won the no. 1 spot. Shortly after, Marlo Santoso claimed a win at the no. 2 spot.
In the no. 3, Jonathan Clark tied the match with a three set win over Juanjo Martin, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. That was the first three set match of the tournament that counted toward a team score.
David Bolin made the Charlotte contingent happy with a win at the no. 5 spot to clinch the match. He defeated Marc-Olivier Lux, 6-3, 7-6.
With the win, Charlotte will have the chance to play for fifth place on Saturday against Louisville at 9 a.m. at Motion Fitness and Tennis Center in New Berlin, Wis. Southern Miss finished tied for seventh.
