Eagle Golfers Finish 13th In ASU Indian Classic
JONESBORO, Ark. -- Southern Miss shot a final round 308 team total in the ASU Indian Classic today to finish in 13th place in the 19-team event, the final tournament of the regular season for Head Coach Steve Johnson and his Golden Eagles.
Shane Rushing recorded Southern Miss' top finish with a 71-74-79--224 score that earned him a tie for 30th place. Michael Soroka (74-75-76--225) tied for 37th, Ben Snow (72-79-78--229) tied for 55th, Justin Emil (78-74-80--232) tied for 67th and Matt Wofford (79-86-75--240), who shot the best Golden Eagle round of the day, finished in a tie for 85th.
North Texas maintained its 36-hole lead with an even 300 team score today, to finish at 286-289-300--875, good enough for a 9-shot victory over runnerup and host Arkansas State (292-296-296--884), an Indian squad that shot the best round of the day (296) and moved from fifth to second. Nebraska (293-292-301--886) moved from fourth to third, Iowa State (287-301-299--887) moved from a tie for fifth into fourth, and LSU (296-295-297--888) jumped all the way from 10th to a tie for fifth, with Arkansas-Little Rock, to round out the top five teams.
After finishing at 5-under-par 139 after Monday's double round, South Alabama's Gareth Maybin (69-70-72--211) shot an even par 72 in today's final round, to finish a shot in front of teammate Ryan Gildersleeve (66-74-72--212). North Texas' Freddy Espericueta (70-70-73--213) and South Florida's Oscar Fraustro (72-69-74--215) finished third and fourth, respectively, and three players tied for the No. 5 spot.
As opposed to Monday's two rounds, when 19 players broke par in round one and 15 under-par rounds were recorded in the second round, only two players managed to better par Tuesday, led by Oral Roberts' Luke Scrymgeour's 4-under-par 68.
The ASU tournament ends one of the more successful regular seasons ever for the Golden Eagles who next will play in the Conference USA Tournament, Apr. 21-23, in Dade City, Fla., near Tampa, Fla.
