Eagle Golfers Are 12th At ASU Indian Classic
JONESBORO, Ark. -- Southern Miss shot a 36-hole team total of 598 in the opening round of the ASU Indian Classic golf tournament here Monday and stands in 12th place in the 19-team field with only Tuesday's final 18 holes remaining.
The tournament, the last of the regular season for Head Coach Steve Johnson and his Golden Eagle team, is being hosted by Arkansas State.
North Texas is tied with Arkansas-Little Rock after 36 holes, both with one-under-par 575 team totals. North Texas shots rounds of 286 and 289 while UALR posted scores of 285, the best team round of the opening day, and 290. Louisville (295-289--584) and Nebraska (293-292--585) are third and fourth, respectively, and three teams, including host Arkansas State (292-296--588) are tied for the No. 5 spot.
South Alabama's Gareth Maybin (69-70), and UALR's Billy Zihala (70-69) top the individual leaderboard after 36 holes, both at 5-under-par 139. North Texas' Freddy Espericueta (70-70--140), and South Alabama's Ryan Gildersleeve (66-74--140) are tied for third and South Florida's Oscar Fraustro (72-69--141) rounds out the top five.
Gildersleeve's six-under-par 66 matched Tulane's Bill Roach, Jr.'s score as the best individual rounds of the day, a day that, thanks to gusting winds through the day, produced higher scores than are normal for this point in the season.
Southern Miss scores for the day include: T17 Shane Rushing (71-74--145), T37 Michael Soroka (74-75--149), T50 Ben Snow (72-79--151), T57 Justin Emil (78-74--152), and T93 Matt Wofford (79-86--165).
Following the ASU tournament, Southern Miss will end the season in the Conference USA Tournament, Apr. 20-23, in Tampa, Fla.
