Off The Tee, Day Three, at Chenal Trojan Cup
Day 3, the 36-hole day, March 24, 2003
Today was another golf marathon that literally lasted from sun-up to sun-down. There are 18 teams in the field so it took the entire day to play all 36 holes on a course that required constant grinding.
There wasn?t a cloud in the sky all day, which made for a great day for golf. The only thing was, the wind blew like there was no tomorrow and there never seemed to be a dominant direction. The wind would swirl through the trees, which made it difficult to navigate and, overall, scores were high.
The wind didn?t bother Matt Wofford. He shot 68-69?137 for the first two rounds and is tied for the lead. We put ourselves in good position to make a move on Tuesday by shooting six-over-par as a team.
One of the players I was paired with today had a really rough time on the course. This golf course can definitely punish a golfer if he doesn?t play smart. I could tell that this kid was a freshman by some of the decisions he made. He had a free drop away from a drain in the fairway on the 13th hole. Instead of dropping away from the trouble, he dropped his ball directly in an old divot. I wanted to say something to him, but I soon remembered what it was like to be a freshman collegiate golfer.
We finally finished just before the sun went down. It seems like we always play that last hole in the dark on the 36-hole day. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow, trailing UALR by seven shots. It is a good opportunity to sneak up and steal the trophy.
