Eagles Netters Beat Saint Louis In C-USA Shootout
Fort Worth, Texas - Southern Miss lost the doubles point, but bounced back to win four singles matches to defeat Saint Louis in first round play at the Conference USA Shootout here Friday morning.
With the victory, Southern Miss improved to 3-4, and will meet Louisville Saturday morning in second round action. The Forth Worth event is part of a Conference USA weekend that has all 12 teams playing, six in Fort Worth and six others in Tampa, Fla. Other teams playing in Fort Worth include DePaul, East Carolina, Louisville and host TCU. The event runs through Sunday.
Saint Louis won at No. 2 and No. 3 in doubles play to take a 1-0 lead, but Southern Miss bounced back to win at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to win the four points necessary to claim the match. Southern Miss' J.J. Martin and Reid Bourgeois lost to SLU's Lance Vodika and Tom de Larcek, 8-5, and Uwe Gneiting and David Canudas dropped an 8-6 decision to Thomas Kwong and Mike Hoosien. Marc-Oliver Lux and Nicolas Cateret trailed Ikalka Jobe and Taylor Curran 6-5 in the No. 1 doubles match when it was halted.
In the singles matches, Southern Miss' Gneiting defeated Jobe, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1, Canudas defeated Vodika, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2, Martin lost to Kwong, 7-6, 6-3, Cateret defeated de Larzak, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4, Lux defeated Sanjeev Paramanthan, 6-3, 6-3, and Bourgeois was trailing Curran 3-1 when play was stopped in the No. 6 singles match.
