Eagle Golfers Are Second At Beau Chene Classic
Mandeville, La. -- Records seemed to be the order of the day at the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic today, and Southern Miss did its share with the best team opening round in the event's 14-year history, at 8-under-par 280.
Head Coach Steve Johnson's team added a second round 3-under-par 285, for an 11-under-par 280-285--565, and good for sole possession of second place in the 15-team field and only two shots off the pace set by host Southeastern Louisiana. Louisville, in eighth place after 36 holes, shot the best team round in the tourney's history with a 276 in today's second round. The Golden Eagles' opening round beat the 282 posted by South Florida in the 2000 event, and Louisville's second round bettered the old record of 277, set by UAB in 2000.
Southeastern is at 286-277--563 after two rounds and those numbers match the best 36-hole score in the tournament's history.
Tulane's Chris Wheeler finished at nine-under-par 65-70--135 to and stands alone atop the leader board with a score that tied the 36-hole mark set by UAB's Chris Devlin in the 2000 event.
Ole Miss (290-277--567), Campbell University (285-283--568), and East Carolina (291-277--568) round out the top five after 36 holes.
Southern Miss' Shane Rushing sits in a tie for third place after two rounds at seven-under-par 68-70--138, and Justin Emil is tied for fifth at six-under-par 68-70--138. Other Golden Eagle scores today included Justin Elliott in a tie for 19th (69-73--142), Matt Wofford tied for 51st (72-78--150), and Michael Soroka is tied for 59th (75-76--151).
Teams will use a shotgun start at 8 a.m., shotgun start for Tuesday's final 18-hole round.
