Southeastern Louisiana Leads Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Shane Rushing shot 66-71 -- 137 on day one of the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate Tournament, at Hattiesburg Country Club, leading the Golden Eagles as well as the field. Southeastern Louisiana overtook first-round leader McNeese State by shooting a team score of 277 to hold an eight-stroke lead over second-place Wichita State, 291-279 -- 570.
The first round started an hour late this morning, as the teams took the links at 8:30, and the golfers endured 40-degree temperatures throughout the day. However, inconveniences did not prevent McNeese State's Dean Rodgers from recording a course record of 64 in the first round. A combined total of 10 eagles also were recorded in the first two rounds.
Rushing holds a one-stroke lead over Ryan Campbell of Troy State, who carded 69-69 -- 138 for second place. Steven Tiley ranks third with 72-68 -- 140, while leading SLU's top team performance.
Southern Miss (284-287 -- 571) shares third place with McNeese State, who held first place with a 278 in round one, but scored 293 in round two. Iowa State placed fifth with a 296-288 -584.
Southern Miss also features Justin Emil (tied for eight with 72-70 -- 142) and Ben Snow (tied for 15th with 69-75 -- 144) in the top 20. Other Golden Eagle team members include Michael Soroka, who tied for 42nd with 79-71 -- 150, and Justin Elliot who scored 77-78 -- 155 for a share of 57th place.
Danny Dennis leads the individual golfers with a tie for eighth after shooting 72-70 -- 142. Matt Wofford scored 70-75 -- 145 and tied for 18th, Jon Borne carded 75-73 -- 148 and tied for 32nd and Will Taylor finished with 77-74 -- 151 and a tie for 46th.
Round three of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate begins tomorrow, Feb. 18, with a 7:30 a.m. tee time.
