Men's Tennis Downs Southern, 6-1
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team won the doubles point, winning all three matches, and won five-of-the-six singles matches to post an impressive 6-1 home opening victory over Southern University, today, at Tatum Park Tennis Complex.
The Southern Miss No. 1 doubles team of Nicholas Carteret and David Terol endured a tough match but pulled out the 8-6 victory. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams didn't have as much trouble, as the Golden Eagles' No. 2 team of J.J. Martin and Reid Bourgeois defeated Michael Dale and Christopher Williams, 8-3, and Southern's No. 3 team of Uwe Gneiting and David Canudas defeated Gregory Pipkins and Alejandro Galindo, 8-4.
The Golden Eagles posted two-set wins in the Nos. 1 - 4 singles matches. Canudas posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alex Hidalgo at No. 1, Gneiting won 6-1, 6-2, over Benjamin Neube at No. 2, Martin defeated Dale at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3 and Cartaret won at No. 4 over Galindo, 6-0, 6-3.
Southern Miss' Bourgeois picked up the three-set win over Tommie Parnell, winning the first set, 6-3, dropping the second, 4-6, and winning the final one, 7-6. Southern registered its only win of the match at No. 6 singles as Pipkins defeated Terol, dropping game one, 6-2, but coming back to win game two 6-3 and game three, 7-6.
Southern Miss raises its record to 1-2 on the season and travels to Baton Rouge, La., on Feb. 9, for a 2 p.m., match at LSU.
