Southern Miss' McCaleb Named Freshman All-American

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Southern Miss kicker Darren McCaleb was named a third-team freshman All-American by The Sporting News today. He was one of four players from Conference USA to be named to the team.

With McCaleb's selection to the team, that marks the sixth Golden Eagle freshman named to the team in the past eight years. The others were Adalius Thomas, DB (1996); John Nix, DL (1997); Derrick Nix, RB (1998); Rod Davis, LB (2000); Skylor Magee, DL (2001).

McCaleb, who successfully kicked 14-of-16 (.875) field goal attempts for the season and 31-of-32 extra point attempts, led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 73 points. He hit 8-of-8 from between 20-29, 2-of-3 from 30-39 and 3-of-4 from 40-49, including his season long kick of 47 yards against Tulane.

McCaleb, named to Conference USA's All-Freshman Team, is No. 4 in Conference USA in field goals made per game and No. 8 in scoring. He is also No. 31 in the nation in field goals per game and No. 74 in scoring.

During the season, McCaleb put together streaks of eight in row before missing one against Houston and currently has kicked five in a row, including the 41 and 47 yarders against Tulane.

McCaleb is fourth in the Southern Miss record books for kick scoring in a season. He is tied for 10th in a season in field goals made and stands as No. 1 in field goal percentage in a season.

He hit three field goals at Cincinnati, including the game winner, a 26-yarder with 1:10 left in the game. He also hit two field goals in the Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane and TCU games.

TCU's Robert Merrill (RB) was named to the second team and Houston's Kevin Kolb (QB) and USF's Stephen Nicholas (LB) were named to the third team.
