Lady Eagles Crusie to 64-35 Victory
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss Lady Eagle basketball team placed five players in double figures, defeating Mississippi Valley State, 64-35, in the opening game of the Hattiesburg Inn on the Hill Classic Friday night.Michelle Poindexter led the group with 12 points followed by Lana Lewis with 11, Deondra Carter, Tierra Lassiter and Denise Wilson chipped in 10 points each. Robin Williams led Miss. Valley (1-2) with 14 points.
Southern Miss, who improved to 5-0, led 24-16 at the half. Both teams struggled from the field during the first half, with Southern Miss shooting 26.9 (7-26) percent from the field and Valley hitting just 19.2 percent (5-26) in the first half.
Southern Miss finally got on track in the second half, shooting 51.6 percent from the field on 16-of-31. The Lady Eagles had only four turnovers in the second half.
After lead by eight points, 35-27 with 11:34 remaining in the game, Southern Miss went on an 18-6 run over a seven-minute span. Southern Miss held the rebounding edge, 45-35.
