Lady Eagles Lose To Arkansas-Little Rock, 56-51
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Arkansas-Little Rock's Alicia Cash scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, leading UALR to a 56-51 victory over Southern Miss in women's basketball action Tuesday in the Alltel Arena.
Southern Miss, 10-1, had its 10-game winning streak snapped while UALR improved to 5-6. Lotte Hulshof led the Lady Eagles with 14 points and Michelle Poindexter added 12 for Southern Miss. Jocelyn Love scored 16 points for the Trojans, while Tamara Humphrey pulled down 10 rebounds.
"We had several opportunities to win this game tonight," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "We didn't execute on the offense and we had a couple of defensive breakdowns. I thought the turning point was us not getting the charging foul, but that happens when you are on the road. We just have to regroup and build on this game and learn from the mistakes we made. Your character comes out in the losses like this."
Southern Miss led 28-21 at the half behind Hulshof and Deondra Carter's combining for 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. The Lady Eagles opened the game, outscoring UALR 10-4 in the first five minutes of the game. Over the next five minutes, Southern Miss built its lead to eight, 17-9 with 10:49 to go before the half, behind Hulshof. Southern Miss maintained a lead throughout the remainder of the half, however, UALR made a run and got within four points, 25-21, until Hulshof hit her second three-pointer, giving the Lady Eagles a 28-21 halftime lead.
Southern Miss opened the second half with another Hulshof trey, giving Southern Miss its largest lead at 10 points, 31-21. UALR then outscored Southern Miss 9-0, cutting the lead to one, 31-30. The Lady Eagles then outscored UALR, 12-6, over the next eight minutes to take a 43-36 lead.
At that point, UALR outscored the Lady Eagles 11-0 over a 5:33 span. During that run, Southern Miss missed three field goal attempts, committed four fouls and had three turnovers. UALR took its first lead of the game, 45-43, when Cash hit a driving layup and drawing a foul in the process with 3:56 remaining. The Trojans led by as many as four points on two occasions, but Southern Miss was able to tie the game twice in the last two minutes, with the last time with 40 seconds remaining in the game on a Lana Lewis layup. UALR got the lift it needed when Kim Davis hit only her second basket of the game, a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining. Southern Miss had its three-point attempt blocked and Heather Morris sealed the win, connecting on two free throws with five seconds left.
Southern Miss continues its road swing, playing at Samford on Jan. 3 at 4 p.m.
