Southern Miss Resumes Postseason Practices HATTIESBURG, Miss.
The team returned to the practice field Thursday, the first workout in three days, and also will hold two more sessions this weekend, one each on Saturday and Sunday.
Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower thought the last two workouts were good, but there was still some room for improvement.
"The practices were all right," Bower said. "You can tell that we have been in exams and have been off a few days. We have to start picking it up a little bit. We have mostly been working against each other, and we haven't started working a whole lot on our Utah looks. But we'll get the coaches in and start finalizing the game plan and doing more in our preparation."
Bower said that a few players are still nursing injuries. He also said that defensive back John Eubanks injured an ankle in Friday's practice, and the extent of the injury is not yet certain.
Friday also is graduation day for seven Southern Miss players, including Greg Brooks (New Orleans, La.); Terrell Browden (Baton Rouge, La.); Addaryl Edwards (Amite, La.); Corey Hosey (Bay Springs, Miss.); Jacob Matlock (Meridian, Miss.); LeVon Pears (Mobile, Ala.); and Jeremy Parquet (Norco, La.)
"That's what it's all about," Bower said. "I am real proud of those guys. The reason you come to college is to get an education. It's another good class; they all took care of their business."
The Golden Eagles have 11 more postseason practices before facing the champions from the Mountain West Conference, Utah, in the 2003 AXA Liberty Bowl on Wed., Dec. 31, at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN.
