Lady Eagles Use Second Half Rally For Win
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagles shot an impressive 54 percent from the field, including 57.7 percent in the second, defeating Louisiana-Monroe 68-59, Monday night in Reed Green Coliseum.
Freshman Michelle Poindexter led all scorers with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds, while senior guard Lana Lewis scored 16 points and Deondra Carter added 12 points to round out the Lady Eagle scoring. Michelle Biley and Stephanie Williams led UL-Monroe with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring off consecutive turnovers by Southern Miss. Southern Miss finally scored at the 18:37 mark on a basket by Poindexter. The Lady Eagles cut the lead to one, 9-8, at the 16:04 mark, but ULM then scored four unanswered points for a 13-8 lead.
Southern Miss (2-0) chipped away at the ULM lead over a five minute span, to take its first lead of the game, 18-17, on a Denise Wilson layup. However, that lead was short lived, as ULM out scored Southern Miss 21-13, taking a 38-31 lead into the half.
Southern Miss opened the second half with a 12-1 run over a 4:40 span, taking a 43-39 lead. ULM then used a 14-9 run over nine minutes to regain a 53-52 lead with 6:28 remaining in the game. The Lady Eagles responded with a quick basket to take the lead for good, 54-53, on a Poindexter basket. From there, the Lady Eagles scored another six unanswered points, building their lead to seven, 60-53, with just under five minutes remaining.
ULM (1-1) cut the lead to three, 60-57, with 3:19 remaining and that was as close as the Indians would get. The Lady Eagles finished the game with an 8-2 run.
Southern Miss had 26 turnovers, but countered by dominating the boards with a 41-27 rebounding edge.
The Lady Eagles continue their seven-game homestand, hosting McNeese State, Nov. 29, in a 7 p.m. tip.
