Golden Eagle Tennis Players Advance to the Quarterfinals
LAFAYETTE, La. ? Southern Miss men?s tennis teams had four players advance to the quarterfinals, with Juanjo Martin and David Canudas advancing in the men?s A division singles and Dylan Mezey and Marc Lux advancing in the B division of the Ragin? Cajuns Men?s Tennis Classic, Friday.
Martin allowed only a combined five points, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sandy Farguharson of Texas-Arlington and a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Amanjot Singh of Louisiana-Lafayette. Canudas defeated Olivier Nussbaum of Southeastern Louisiana, 6-3, 6-3 and advanced to the quarterfinals with a walkover, when Brian Fischer of LSU with drew from competition. Martin will play the top seed Cory Ross of LSU, while Canudas plays the 4th-seed Clinton Jacobs of South Alabama at 10:30 a.m., Saturday.
Reid Bourgeois came back from one set down, defeating Florent Girod of Mississippi State, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. He then lost to Evghenii Corduneanu of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-2, 6-3.
In the men?s B division singles, Mezey advanced to the quarterfinals, following a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Zack Saloom of Louisiana-Lafayette and a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Walter Whitmire of UALR. Lux defeated Michael Date of Southern, 6-2, 6-0. Christopher Rea defeated Josh Smith of Southeastern Louisiana in his first match, 6-4, 6-3, then lost to Julien De La Miettrie of UNO, 6-3, 6-4. Thomas Funke lost his opening round match to Ivan Kovalev of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-1, 6-2. Funke bounced back for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Paul Birkett of Southeastern Louisiana in the consolation draw.
Mezey will play Matt Armstrong of Mississippi State, while Lux takes on Patrizio of Tulane at 10:30 a.m.
